A study is conducted to compare the starting salaries of male and female college graduates who find jobs. It is suspected that male college graduates are making better starting salaries. Pairs are formed by choosing a male and a female with the same major and similar grade point averages (GPA). A random sample of 10 pairs is formed in this manner and the starting salary of each person is recorded. The results are shown below.
(a) Let ìd = mean difference in starting salary for males and females. Do the sample data provide sufficient evidence that the starting salary for males is higher than that of females? Perform a hypothesis test involving ìd to find out.
